German Frog-Mouth Helm c 1500

This helmet is an authentic replica of a southern German Stechhelm (jousting helmet) from the early 16th century. The frog-mouth helmet shape evolved from the great helm (or bucket helmet) in the early 15th century. It was worn exclusively in tournaments in combination with the Stechzeug (jousting armour). German Frog-Mouth Helm, circa 1500 1.6mm steel

  • A beautiful, rare rendition of German armour smithing artistry.
  • Material: front and back panels from 1.6mm steel, top plate from 1.4mm steel
  • massive brass rivets with decorative heads
  • inside canvas padding
  • Suitable for head circumference up to 63cm
  • Weight: approx. 4.3 kg

This helmet is composed of a domed top plate with contoured ribs, a front panel tapering in ship's bow-like manner and a back panel with offset, ribbed upper section. All three elements are connected with ornamental, historically accurate brass rivets. The side vents at ear level do not only facilitate hearing but also allow for easier breathing. The inside top of the helmet is padded with thick canvas. As the helm is equipped with pre-drilled holes and a rear bracket, it can be mounted onto a cuirass.
