Medieval Brown Leather Kidney Pouch with Riveted Flap

Historical Context and Proper Wear

During the 14th and 15th centuries, pouches of this so-called kidney shape (known as kidney pouches or gipcieres) were immensely popular across Europe. Since the garments of the time—both tunics and surcoats—lacked pockets entirely, all personal items were worn suspended from the waist. This model stands out with its firm and well-thought-out attachment system. On the back of the pouch, there are two wide, sturdy leather loops, which are further reinforced by stitching and a leather knot. You simply thread your leather belt through these loops. Thanks to them, the pouch distributes its weight perfectly, sits firmly on the hip, does not twist, and won't hinder you during a normal walk or in the chaos of battle. The loops comfortably accommodate a belt up to 5 cm (2 in) wide.

Care and Maintenance of Leather Gear

Natural smooth cowhide is a fantastic material that will serve you for many years if treated correctly. We recommend thoroughly treating the pouch at least twice a year with a high-quality, colourless leather balm, ideally one containing natural beeswax. The balm deeply nourishes the leather, keeps it supple, and significantly increases its resistance to rain and morning dew. If your bag gets heavily soaked at an event, never dry it near a blazing fire or on a hot radiator. The leather could dry out, harden, and irreversibly crack. Always allow it to air dry naturally at room temperature. Minor variations in the colour and texture of the leather are natural hallmarks of this material, forming its characteristic and sought-after look.

Safety Instructions for Proper Use

This pouch is designed as a historical clothing accessory for the everyday carrying of light items, such as keys, coins, a phone, or flint and steel. Never overload it with extremely heavy contents (for example, a large quantity of lead musket balls or stones), which could cause the leather to deform or the rear belt loops to unexpectedly tear out. Under no circumstances should a product made of genuine leather be placed in a washing machine or a tumble dryer, as this would result in its complete and irreversible destruction.

Recommended Costume Accessories

To stylishly and securely suspend this medieval pouch, we highly recommend acquiring a high-quality, sturdy leather belt with a forged iron or brass buckle, as well as an authentic linen coin purse to help you maintain perfect order inside the spacious bag.
