Medieval Leather Belt Pouch with Buckle, Holy Roman Empire

Historical Context and Practical Application

In the 14th century, belt pouches were an absolute necessity for every pilgrim, merchant, townsman, and mercenary. Period clothing lacked sewn-in pockets, so all personal items had to be carried suspended from the waist. This specific type of pouch is characterised by a spacious cut and a wide flap that protects the contents from the weather. In the Middle Ages, it was used to store coins, flint and steel, or a comb. Today, you will appreciate its volume for discreetly carrying your mobile phone, keys, and wallet, which would otherwise ruin the authenticity of your costume.

The pouch is worn suspended from a belt, facilitated by a solid and sufficiently wide loop on its back. Fastening is achieved by classically threading the leather strap through a reliable bronze buckle. The flap is tastefully decorated along its perimeter with pressed floral tooling, which corresponds to the aesthetics of the High and Late Middle Ages.

Leather Care and Safety Instructions

Leather is a durable natural material, but it requires occasional care to maintain its flexibility and longevity. We recommend regularly treating the pouch with a high-quality leather balm containing beeswax. If you get caught in the rain on your journey and the pouch gets wet, always let it dry slowly at room temperature. Never dry the leather on a radiator, near an open flame, or in harsh summer sunlight, as it risks irreversibly hardening and cracking.

When using the pouch, make sure not to place sharp objects inside without a protective cover. Loosely tossed knives without a scabbard or sharp awls could cut the leather from the inside. Please also bear in mind that slight variations in colour and surface texture compared to the photographs are a natural characteristic of genuine leather, making every piece a unique original.

Recommended Accessories

To accompany this practical medieval pouch, we highly recommend acquiring a sturdy period leather belt with a historical buckle and a set of replica historical coins, which will bring your costume to absolute perfection.
