Historical Context and Usage of Belt Pouches

Throughout the High Middle Ages (13th and 14th centuries), leather pouches and purses were an absolute necessity for daily life. Because period clothing lacked internal pockets, people carried their personal belongings suspended directly from their belts. The rounded shape with its slightly extended flap and compact dimensions were highly popular for their lightness and practicality. The small pouch did not merely serve to hold money but concealed various everyday items – from tinder for fire making to small valuables. The absolutely authentic fastening is achieved by threading a leather cord through a cross-shaped slit on the front flap, fully conforming to period leatherworking practices without the use of modern metal elements.

How to Properly Attach and Use the Pouch

Attaching it to your gear is absolutely intuitive. On the back, you will find two firmly attached leather loops (reinforced with rivets for maximum strength) through which you simply thread your belt. The loops are generous enough to accommodate massive period straps with a width of up to 5 centimetres (approx. 1.97 inches). The interior consists of a single chamber whose sides consist of supple leather, allowing the bag to slightly adjust its volume according to its contents. Opening is achieved by releasing and pulling the leather tie out of the front slit. For maximum comfort when walking and in combat, we recommend sliding the pouch slightly to the side of your belt around the hip area.

Proper Genuine Leather Care Instructions

This product is handmade from genuine cowhide leather. Minor variations in colour and surface texture are natural properties of this material and make each piece a unique original. To ensure the leather maintains its strength, flexibility, and moisture resistance over the long term, it requires regular care. We recommend treating the entire pouch at least once a season, or after getting wet, with a high-quality leather balm based on beeswax. Never dry the leather near a direct heat source (radiator, hairdryer, the open flames of a campfire), otherwise it could harden, become brittle, and crack.

Crucial Warnings

The bag is precisely stitched from leather; however, keep in mind that it is designed as a clothing accessory for storing light items. Never overload it with excessively heavy loads (e.g., a large quantity of lead bullets) to prevent the loops from tearing out. Additionally, protect the leather fastening cord from unnecessary friction against the sharp edges of your armour.
