German Asymmetrical Gothic Pauldrons, 1460–1500
Design and Tactical Asymmetry
You might notice that the shoulders are not identical. This is not a mistake, but a deliberate tactical feature common in the 15th century. The left pauldron is slightly larger and provides more coverage. Why? Because the left side was the one most exposed to the opponent's attacks during combat (whether facing a lance or a sword). The right pauldron, in contrast, is cut away slightly more to provide maximum mobility for your weapon arm, allowing you to swing a sword or wield a polearm without restriction.
The entire surface features prominent fluting (ridges). This element is not just aesthetic—in real combat, the ridges strengthen the relatively thin metal and help deflect weapon points and blades away from the body. The bottom edges of the individual lames are decoratively cut, emphasizing the elegant Gothic style.
The pauldrons are attached at the top by pointing (lacing) them to your gambeson or gorget (holes are provided for this purpose) and are secured around the upper arm with a sturdy leather strap and buckle.

Safety and Usage Warning
Note: Although these pauldrons look robust, they are made of 1.2 mm (18 gauge) steel. This armor is not designed for full-contact heavy combat (such as Buhurt, HMB, or Battle of the Nations). Heavy blows from steel weapons could deform the metal and cause injury. However, they are an excellent choice for:
- LARP and Cosplay
- Film and theater productions
- Light stage combat (when worn with proper padding)
- Costume wear at historical fairs
For comfortable wear and impact absorption, we strongly recommend wearing a thick padded gambeson underneath the plate armor.
Maintenance
This product is made of mild steel, which is susceptible to rust. To keep your armor in top condition:
- Store it in a dry environment.
- Wipe it dry immediately after every use.
- Regularly protect the surface with mineral oil (e.g., WD-40, Ballistol) or synthetic armor wax.
