Late Gothic Oval Brass Double Buckle with Shell Motif

Historical Context and Art Style

The buckle is inspired by finds and iconography from the 15th century, belonging to the late Gothic era. The so-called spectacle buckles or figure-eight buckles with a fixed central bar represented a very popular and widely distributed type of fastening throughout Central and Western Europe. They were used for fastening belts, footwear, bags, and as part of military equipment. The decoration in the form of small flutes or a shell motif on the edge of the frame is very typical of late medieval cast buckles, enhancing the aesthetic value of the item without disrupting its utilitarian function.

How to Use and Attach

Properly attaching the buckle to a leather strap is relatively straightforward and follows historical methods. The end of the leather strap, the width of which must not exceed the inner width of the bar, is passed around the central pin. Prior to this, an elongated hole must be punched into the leather to allow the movable prong of the buckle to pass through freely. The leather is then folded over the central axis and secured to itself. Historically, the fixation is done either by firm saddler stitching using linen or hemp thread, or by riveting with solid copper or brass rivets. When fastening, the free end of the belt is passed through one loop of the buckle, the prong is inserted into the appropriate hole, and the rest of the strap is secured by passing it through the second loop.

Maintenance and Metal Care

Cast brass is a durable material that reacts naturally with air and moisture, thereby developing a period patina. If you prefer an aged and authentic antique look, simply wipe the buckle occasionally with a dry cotton cloth to remove dust and sweat. Should you wish to maintain its high gloss, we recommend using special cleaning wadding or polishing pastes designed specifically for non-ferrous metals and brass. Avoid using harsh chemicals, acids, or coarse abrasive sponges, which would damage the surface of the item.

Safety Guidelines

This buckle is designed as a clothing accessory for historical costumes, historical fencing, and LARP. Even though it is made of solid metal, it is not certified as safety equipment. Under no circumstances should it be used as part of modern climbing gear, rigging for working at heights, equestrian harnesses intended for pulling, or for securing heavy loads. Using it in such a manner risks material deformation and serious injury.

Recommended Accessories

To accompany this buckle, we recommend purchasing a high-quality cowhide leather strap in the appropriate dimensions and period brass or copper rivets, enabling you to assemble the entire belt securely and historically accurately.
