Gothic Style Breastplate with Fluting (1450–1500)
1xWhether on the battlefield, at court, or guarding the city gates, a breastplate is an essential piece of equipment for any nobleman, soldier, or mercenary of the late 15th century. This German-style chest plate captures the essence of the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. As a standalone breastplate (without a backplate), it is secured with sturdy cross-straps on the back, making it a versatile choice for heavy infantry portrayals. Further product information ...
Gothic Style Breastplate with Fluting (1450–1500)
Form Meets Function
This armour features the distinctive aesthetic of the Gothic period. The fluting (ridges) radiating across the chest serves a dual purpose: it strengthens the steel plate against impact and helps deflect enemy blades away from the body. The lower part of the armour features a segmented fauld (lames), which articulates to allow for bending and movement, crucial for both riding and foot combat.
A notable historical detail is the central brass buckle at the top of the chest. In the 15th century, this was typically used to secure a leather strap from a gorget or a bevor (chin guard), ensuring the neck protection stayed firmly in place during battle.
Usage and Sizing
Made from mild steel with a thickness varying between approx. 1.2 mm and 1.5 mm, this breastplate is ideal for:
- Reenactment & LARP: Fits perfectly into scenarios ranging from the Wars of the Roses to the early Italian Wars.
- Costume: Provides a high-quality, authentic look for theatre or cosplay.
Note on fit: This is a "One Size" item, generally fitting L to XL frames. It is designed to be worn over a gambeson (padded jacket). Do not wear this directly over a tunic, as the padding is essential for comfort and impact absorption.

Care Instructions
The steel is untreated and may arrive with a protective layer of oil or slight surface rust (patina), which is normal. To maintain your armour:
- Keep it dry. Moisture is the enemy.
- Coat regularly with mineral oil or synthetic gun oil to prevent rust.
- Remove any surface rust with a scouring pad or fine steel wool.
