Flexible Churburg Plate Cuirass with Brass Edging from 14th Century

Construction and Historical Context of the Churburg Armour

The armour is inspired by the famous find from the armoury of Churburg Castle (Castel Coira) in present-day South Tyrol, Italy. This specific type of armour dates to around 1360 and represents an interesting transitional piece between mail armour and a full solid plate cuirass. The construction consists of nine hand-forged steel parts that are firmly riveted to massive leather strips on the inside. Thanks to this ingenious solution, the cuirass is not rigid but can fluidly follow the movements of your torso.

The dominant feature of the front is a massive steel "V". From a historical point of view, this is a so-called stop-rib, the main purpose of which was to catch and deflect an enemy blade or spearhead away from the vulnerable neck and face of the wearer. The luxurious overall appearance is enhanced by the brass edging, which in the 14th century was a sign of a wealthier warrior or nobleman.

Practical Use and Wearing Recommendations

This cuirass is designed for a wide range of activities. It serves perfectly for stage combat, historical battle reenactments, or as premium equipment for LARP. Putting it on is relatively easy – the back remains open and the armour is fixed using two strong crossed leather straps with classic buckles, allowing you to individually adjust the armour to your chest circumference.

We strongly warn you that although the armour is fully functional for normal stage and light contact fencing, it is not protective armour suitable for extreme heavy combat such as buhurt (Battle of the Nations). This requires armour with special certification and significantly thicker material. For comfortable wearing and shock absorption, it is absolutely essential to wear a suitable undergarment under this plate cuirass. Wearing steel armour directly on thin clothing or bare skin can cause chafing and bruising.

Maintenance and Safety Warnings

To ensure the armour serves you for many years and retains its shine, it requires regular care. Mild steel is prone to rusting, so the cuirass must be wiped dry after every use (especially after sweating or contact with moisture) and treated with a layer of gun oil (e.g., Ballistol or WD-40). We recommend occasionally treating the leather straps with leather balm or beeswax so they do not crack and retain their flexibility.

Never leave the armour lying in a damp environment and avoid storing it in closed plastic bags where moisture could condense. When used in combat, always ensure your safety and that of your opponents, and use the armour only for purposes for which its material thickness is designed.
