Are you looking for the perfect addition to your Early Medieval costume that underscores your status as a free man? This short Viking seax is not just an ordinary knife, but a masterful example of craftsmanship combining utility with aesthetics. With a blade length of 19 cm (7.5 in), it falls into the category of so-called short seaxes, which were an absolute necessity during the Migration Period and the Viking Age. Short Viking Seax with Brass Hilt and Studded Grip

History and Construction

Seaxes evolved from Late Antique knives and spread massively across the Germanic world from the 5th century onwards. However, this specific model, with its visual design—especially the lobed pommel—references the later Viking period (approx. 9th–10th century). The grip is made of dark wood and is fitted with brass studs, which not only decorate but also improve the grip. The pommel and bolster are cast from brass, giving the weapon a luxurious look that contrasts with the cold steel of the blade.

The blade features the typical shape with a straight edge and a spine that slopes sharply towards the tip. The package includes a quality leather scabbard made of cowhide. It is equipped with loops for suspension on a belt in a horizontal position, which was historically the most common way to carry these knives—on the back or side, so they wouldn't get in the way when walking.

Usage and Safety

The blade is made of hardened carbon steel but is supplied with a blunt edge (thickness 1–2 mm / 0.04–0.08 in). This ensures safety when worn in crowds or during scenic performances. The construction of the hilt, where the tang of the blade reaches approximately halfway (it is not a full-tang), predestines this knife primarily for decorative purposes and costume wear. It is not suitable for chopping wood, throwing, or contact combat, where the handle might fail.

Care Instructions

To keep this beauty looking like new for a long time, remember the following:

  • Carbon steel is not stainless. Store the knife in a dry place.
  • Wipe the blade with a cloth and oil it after every use (e.g., WD-40 or gun oil).
  • Brass parts may develop a patina over time—if you prefer a high gloss, you can polish them with a metal polish (e.g., polishing wadding).
  • Treat the leather scabbard occasionally with leather balm to prevent cracking.
