The Seax – A Universal Tool of Its Time

In the Early Middle Ages, the seax was not merely a weapon but, above all, a universal tool for everyday life. Vikings and other Germanic tribes carried it with them at all times. It was used for preparing food, working with wood and leather, making repairs, and countless other craft activities. When necessary, of course, it also became an effective means of self-defence. This particular type, with its characteristic "broken-back" spine, is typical of the late Viking Age, and its shorter design was ideal for finer work and easy carrying.

An Interesting Fact: More Than Just a Name

Did you know that the name of the Germanic tribe, the Saxons, is most likely derived from their signature knife – the seax? This weapon was so characteristic of them that neighbouring peoples began to name them after it, a name that has survived to this day. This knife is thus a direct link to one of the most influential tribes of the Migration Period.

Caring for Your New Seax Knife

To ensure your knife retains its beauty and functionality for years to come, give it the proper care.

  • Blade: As it is made of carbon steel, the blade is prone to rust. Keep it dry at all times. After use, wipe it clean and apply a light coat of conservation oil (e.g., Ballistol or mineral oil).
  • Handle and Sheath: Protect the bone and leather from prolonged exposure to water. You can occasionally treat them with a leather care product or a lightly oiled cloth to prevent the materials from drying out and cracking.

Safety Guidelines

Remember that even though the blade is intentionally delivered blunt, this is not a toy. The tip of the knife is sharp and can easily cause injury.

  • Always carry the knife safely stored in its sheath.
  • Be careful during any handling and be aware of your surroundings.
  • This knife is NOT suitable for historical or stage combat. Its construction is not designed to withstand impacts against another weapon or shield, which could lead to damage to the knife and serious injury.
