John Lee Kei-Ben Iaito Practice Katana

Are you looking for a sword that will be your faithful guide on the path of Iai-Do, the art of drawing the sword? The John Lee Kei-Ben Iaito Katana is designed precisely for this purpose. The name "Kei-Ben" translates to "simple and practical," which perfectly captures the character of this weapon. It is not merely a decoration but a fully functional training tool that combines functionality with traditional Japanese aesthetics. Thanks to the blunt stainless steel blade, it is ideal for safe kata practice and handling without the fear of cuts or the demanding maintenance required by carbon steels.

Practical Design for Daily Training

The heart of the sword is a hand-forged 420 stainless steel blade. This material choice is ideal for an Iaito – the blade does not corrode from hand sweat and does not require constant oiling. The blade is blunt and features a groove (Bo-Hi), which reduces the weight of the sword and produces a characteristic whistling sound when a cut is performed correctly. This gives you immediate feedback on the precision of your technique.

The handle (Tsuka) is made of wood and covered with genuine ray skin (Same), ensuring that the black cotton wrap (Tsuka-Ito) does not slip and stays firmly in place. The wrap is done in a traditional style, guaranteeing a secure grip. Two decorative elements (Menuki) with a Mitsudomoe motif are placed under the wrap. The guard (Tsuba) is cast from a zinc-aluminium alloy and decorated with a delicate floral motif, adding elegance to the sword.

Usage and Care

This sword is primarily intended for non-contact form practice (Kata) and drawing drills. Although the construction is robust, stainless steel is more brittle than the spring steel of sharp swords. The sword is not designed for cutting hard objects (Tameshigiri) or blade-on-blade contact fencing. During practice, focus on the fluidity of movement and technique, not brute force. Wipe the sword with a dry cloth after training to remove sweat and dirt.

Warning

Although it is a blunt weapon, the tip can be sharp, and there is a risk of injury if handled carelessly. The manufacturer does not provide a warranty for blade breakage due to improper use (chopping, prying, impact). The sword serves as a training aid and a collector's item.
