Chainmail Set (Hauberk & Coif)

Do you want to enter the world of medieval battles, LARP, or historical festivals without spending hours maintaining your armour? This complete chainmail set, consisting of a long-sleeved shirt and a separate coif, is the ideal starting point for you. Thanks to the galvanised (zinc-plated) finish, the steel is protected against rust much better than standard mild steel, saving you plenty of oiling time. With a total weight of around 13–15 kg (depending on size), this armour gives you the authentic feeling of the weight real warriors had to carry, while remaining affordable. Chainmail Set (Hauberk & Coif) | Galvanised Steel

Practical and Durable Protection

The set includes a chainmail shirt (hauberk) reaching roughly to mid-thigh and a coif protecting the head, neck, and shoulders. The mesh is woven in the classic European "4-in-1" pattern. The rings are made of 1.6 mm thick steel wire and are butted (round rings, simply closed). This means they are not riveted. The galvanised surface has a bright, silvery-grey colour that looks very effective in sunlight.

This type of armour is ideal for:

  • LARP and Costume Events: Looks authentic and withstands normal movement and light (theatrical) combat.
  • Beginner Fencers: For training movement under load.
  • Theatre and Film Extras: Impressive look with minimal maintenance.

Historical Context

Chainmail was the primary body protection for warriors throughout most of the Middle Ages (from Celts and Romans up to the 14th century). It was valued for its flexibility and ability to resist cutting blows. Producing a single shirt could take thousands of hours of labour and use up to 20,000 rings, making it a very expensive item. Side slits on the shirt allowed the knight to sit comfortably in the saddle.

Specifications and Sizing

When choosing a size, remember the golden rule: you must wear a gambeson (padded jacket) under the chainmail. It absorbs shock and prevents chafing. The dimensions below are for the armour itself. Your chest circumference while wearing your gambeson must be smaller than the stated shirt circumference, otherwise, you won't be able to move.

Care Instructions

The great advantage of galvanisation is rust resistance. The armour does not rust as quickly as plain mild steel. However, we still recommend storing it in a dry place. If the armour gets wet, let it dry thoroughly. Avoid cleaning with sand (barrel rolling), as this would strip away the protective zinc layer.

Important Safety Warning

Since the rings are butted (not riveted), they tend to open up and fall out under heavy impact. This set is NOT intended for full-contact combat (Buhurt, HMB) or heavy fencing with steel weapons, where there is a risk of penetration. Neither the manufacturer nor the retailer accepts responsibility for injuries resulting from improper use.
