Battle-Ready Long Hauberk with Round Riveted Rings Ø 10mm

Technical Specifications and Construction

This hauberk is constructed from round riveted mild steel rings with an internal diameter of 10mm (16 gauge). This combination of material and craftsmanship provides the ideal balance between weight and structural integrity. It features the classic European "4-in-1" weave pattern. The long cut provides protection down to the knees, while the front and back slits ensure the mobility required for fighting on foot or horseback.

Historical Context

Chainmail was the dominant form of body protection on European battlefields from antiquity through the late Middle Ages. A hauberk of this length was a symbol of the knightly class, particularly during the 11th to 13th centuries. Interestingly, producing such a shirt took a master mail-maker hundreds of hours, as every single ring had to be individually riveted. This replica faithfully simulates the appearance and function of those historical masterworks.

Maintenance and Care

As this armour is made of mild steel, it is susceptible to rust. To ensure its longevity, please follow these guidelines:

  • Oiling: Clean the mail after every use and apply a coat of protective oil (such as Ballistol or WD-40).
  • Storage: Keep the hauberk in a dry place. For long-term storage, an airtight container is recommended.
  • Cleaning: Surface rust can be removed with a soft wire brush or by the traditional method of tumbling the mail in a bucket of sand.

Safety Warning

This armour is designed for re-enactment and contact fencing. However, no protection is indestructible. Never wear chainmail without a padded underlayer (gambeson); while the rings prevent cuts, they do not absorb blunt force impact. Do not use damaged armour with missing rivets. For full protection, we recommend combining this hauberk with a chainmail coif and a padded arming cap.

We suggest pairing this hauberk with a high-quality gambeson and a sturdy leather belt to help distribute the weight from your shoulders to your hips.
