Treat yourself to the feeling of true nobility and have this exquisite piece custom-made to your exact measurements.

Historical Context and Origins of the Garment

This type of clothing, often referred to as a surcoat or heraldic tunic, has its roots in the High and Late Middle Ages, approximately from the 13th to the 15th century. Originally, these surcoats were worn by knights over chainmail and later over plate armour to protect the metal from the scorching sun and rain. However, they very quickly became a sign of familial allegiance – bold heraldic symbols (like the eagle depicted here) clearly identified the wearer on the battlefield and at tournaments. Later, surcoats moved from the battlefields into the halls of castles and palaces as highly representative court attire for the European nobility.

When and How to Wear the Surcoat

The men's surcoat is an absolutely ideal choice for portraying a noble lord, a knight, or a wealthy medieval merchant. You will find it exceedingly useful at historical festivals, historical re-enactments, fantasy LARPs, or mediaeval banquets. The garment is comfortably pulled over the head and, thanks to the long slits, provides maximum freedom of movement when walking, dancing, and fighting. The vertical quilting on the chest not only looks good and historically authentic but also helps to maintain the sturdy shape of the garment. Please note that the leather belt, pouch, and leather footwear shown in the photographs are not included.

Material, Care Instructions, and Custom Tailoring

The core of this garment is very high-quality genuine velvet woven from 100% cotton, which is pleasant to the touch and possesses a characteristic noble sheen. The contrasting patterned parts and inserted gores are made of a strong and breathable blend of 55% linen and 45% cotton. This men's surcoat is custom-made to order in other colour combinations according to available fabric swatches. When ordering, simply provide the swatch number, letter, and colour name. The garment is tailored exactly to your measurements based on a completed measurement chart without any surcharge.

To ensure your garment remains beautiful for as long as possible, we highly recommend taking it to a professional dry cleaner. If washing at home is absolutely necessary, opt for a very gentle hand wash in lukewarm water using a mild detergent. Never dry the surcoat in a tumble dryer and do not iron directly over the velvet pile. Always iron carefully inside out or through a slightly damp cotton cloth to avoid burning the velvet.

Recommended Accessories

With this surcoat, we highly recommend acquiring a long leather belt with a brass buckle, a plain linen under-shirt, and leather medieval boots, which together will perfectly correspond to the historical realities of the 14th century.
