Gothic Velvet Surcoat Fleur-de-lis for Noblemen and Knights
Historical Context and Symbolism of the Garment
The surcoat became an indispensable part of the wardrobe of the European nobility and chivalry from roughly the 12th to the 15th centuries. Originally, it was worn over chainmail and later plate armour to protect the metal from the heat of the sun and rain, while also serving as an excellent surface for displaying family heraldry, allowing warriors to recognise each other on the battlefield. Over time, it transitioned into civil court fashion. The motif of the golden lily (Fleur-de-lis) is one of the most famous heraldic symbols of all time. It is traditionally associated with the French monarchy, but in a broader medieval context, it symbolised purity, light, and knightly virtues. The golden lilies on a dark background created a perfect visual contrast that demonstrated wealth and power.
Care and Maintenance of Genuine Velvet
This garment is made of genuine velvet, which is one hundred per cent cotton with a dense and very soft pile. To ensure your surcoat lasts a long time and retains its luxurious sheen and rich colour, it requires gentle handling. We strongly recommend leaving its cleaning exclusively to a professional dry cleaner. Never wash the surcoat in a washing machine and do not tumble dry it, to avoid damaging the golden appliqués and shrinking the cotton. Velvet must not be ironed directly with a classic iron to prevent the pile from being flattened; we recommend carefully smoothing out any creases with a vertical garment steamer from the reverse side.
Recommended Accessories and Delivery Notices
In accordance with historical sources and the specifications of this product, the surcoat is completely sleeveless. We would like to point out that the black long-sleeved under-tunic worn by the model under the surcoat in the accompanying photographs is not included in the delivery. Likewise, the leather belt and historical footwear are not included in the price. To achieve a flawless look, we highly recommend belting the surcoat with a long leather ring belt. It is ideal to wear a linen or woollen under-tunic beneath it. The look of a 14th or 15th-century nobleman is then excellently completed with Gothic pointed shoes (known as poulaines or crakows).
Sizes, Colours, and Custom Tailoring
We offer this medieval surcoat as standard in ready-to-wear sizes according to our size charts. However, if the standard sizes do not suit you, we will gladly tailor it exactly to your measurements at no extra charge. In this case, simply fill out our measurement chart after completing your order. Upon your request, the garment can also be made in other velvet colours according to our current fabric swatch books.
