Historical Context and Origin of the Garment

The foundation of this garment is based on the so-called Spanish fashion, which dominated European royal courts around the year 1550, including France, where this specific style was highly popular. The costume is crafted exactly according to historical illustrations documenting upper-class fashion. The dominant feature is the doublet with a stand-up collar complemented by fine lace (hinting at a ruff) and the typical short balloon pants known as trunk hose. The trousers are made of vertical velvet strips with a contrasting fabric peeking through underneath, which was the absolute height of fashion taste at the time. An integral part is also the stuffed codpiece, which symbolised masculinity, and a short cape casually thrown over the shoulder. Historically, this attire was worn at festive occasions, audiences, and court events.

Material and Proper Care

The costume is made from premium materials. The velvet parts and lace are one hundred percent cotton, while the brocade is made of a sturdy, densely woven blend of polyester and metallic fibres, making it highly resistant to snagging and wearing through. To ensure your costume lasts a long time in perfect condition and looks like new, it is necessary to follow the correct cleaning procedures. Due to the composition of the materials, only professional dry cleaning is recommended. Never wash the garment in a washing machine and do not tumble dry it. Velvet must not be ironed directly to avoid flattening the pile; only careful steaming from the reverse side is recommended.

Usage, Warnings, and Suitable Recommendations

The costume is primarily intended for historical reenactment, theatrical performances, cosplay, and LARP. We would like to point out that the leather belt and historical shoes visible in the accompanying photographs are not included in the delivery. To complete this outfit, we recommend acquiring a high-quality leather belt with a brass buckle and leather Renaissance low shoes corresponding to the mid-16th century. To perfect the role of a nobleman, a magnificent rapier or a decorated dagger is also a highly suitable accessory, as these were commonly worn during this period as a mark of belonging to the free estate.
