This style of layered clothing is based on the fashion of commoners, townsfolk, and court servants at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, spanning the Late Gothic and early Renaissance periods. During this era, it was highly common to protect the more expensive under-layers (represented here by the long robe with colourful sleeves that nod to the popular Landsknecht style) with a practical outer garment. The long sleeveless surcoat or vest protected the body and undergarments from dirt while working. Furthermore, the front lacing allowed the outer layer to be easily adjusted to the wearer's figure. The costume is absolutely ideal for historical reenactment, theatrical performances, castle fairs, live-action role-playing (LARP), or as a functional, historically accurate uniform for staff in themed restaurants.

Material Composition and Proper Care

The entire ensemble is crafted from high-quality, sturdy materials, specifically 100% cotton. The extended outer surcoat is made from duvetyn—a robust cotton fabric with a dense nap that faithfully mimics period broadcloth or velvet and excels in durability. The under-robe and striped sleeves are sewn from classic, breathable cotton canvas. To preserve the rich colours, we recommend machine washing the costume at a maximum of 30 °C (86 °F) on a gentle cycle. Avoid using a tumble dryer and harsh bleaches. You can iron it on a medium setting, ideally while slightly damp and inside out. Please note that the wooden clogs, leather belt, and pouch shown in the photographs are not included.
