Historical Context and Occasions for Wear

Cooks at wealthy noble courts in the 16th and 17th centuries (during the Renaissance and early Baroque periods) were highly respected masters of their craft. Their clothing had to be presentable, as they occasionally appeared before the nobility, but also fully functional. The sturdy doublet protected the body from the radiant heat of the open hearth, whilst the loose striped knee-breeches (known as slops or trunk hose) allowed for rapid and agile movement around a hot and busy kitchen. This costume is ideal for historical reenactment, as a theatrical costume, for town fairs, or live-action role-playing (LARP).

Material, Care Instructions and Warnings

The entire ensemble is made of 100% cotton. While the trousers, coif, and stockings are made of classic cotton canvas, the doublet is sewn from duvetyn—a sturdy cotton fabric with a dense nap that excels in durability and warmth. The fabric is comfortable against the skin and absorbs sweat well. To ensure your costume stays beautiful for as long as possible, machine wash it at a maximum of 30 °C (86 °F) on a gentle cycle. Avoid tumble drying and harsh bleaches. Iron it ideally while slightly damp on a medium setting, and always inside out to avoid damaging the decorative braids. Please note that the footwear and the large wooden spoon shown in the photographs are not included with this costume.
