Renaissance Sherwood Archer Costume with Woolen Chaperon and Doublet

Historical Context and the Role of Archers in History

This distinctively tailored gentleman's outfit corresponds to the late Gothic and early Renaissance periods, specifically the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. During this era, archers were no longer just simple peasant levies; they frequently served as elite units of royal bodyguards, master huntsmen on noble estates, or feared professional mercenaries, such as the famous English longbowmen or French Francs-Archers transitioning into the early modern period. The long cut of the coat, combined with the practical hood (chaperon), protected the marksman from harsh weather during long hours of waiting in the forest undergrowth or during prolonged military sieges. The use of premium velveteen fabric along with the gold Leonese braid indicates a wealthier archer or a guard officer who could afford representative yet highly functional clothing intended for both active service and formal court occasions.

Costume Components and Proper Dressing Guide

The costume is delivered as a harmonious five-piece set, with all individual components perfectly matched in design and historical color palette. When dressing, we recommend proceeding systematically in layers. First, don the lightweight white cotton undershirt and the tight-fitting leggings (breeches) that provide optimal thermal comfort and leg protection. Over the shirt, put on the long velveteen coat, which fastens comfortably at the front with a row of buttons. Next, pull the woolen hood over your head; it features an impressive decorative faux lacing on the chest and a long liripipe tail flowing down the back. Complete your transformation into a historical character by donning the felt hat, which is bordered with gold braid and embellished with a genuine ostrich feather.

Care Instructions for Premium Historical Fabrics

Due to the high percentage of natural wool and the specific brushed pile of the cotton velveteen coat, this costume requires specialized care to ensure it serves you for many years and retains its luxurious look. We strongly recommend professional dry cleaning only at a trusted facility. Never machine wash or tumble dry this garment, as doing so will cause irreversible shrinking of the woolen parts and crush the fine pile of the coat fabric. If minor surface dirt occurs, such as mud or dust from a LARP battlefield, allow the fabric to dry completely and then gently brush it off using a soft clothes brush. Iron only from the reverse side at a low temperature (wool/silk setting, max. 110°C / 230°F) through a clean cotton pressing cloth, or safely remove creases using a garment steamer from a short distance without direct metal contact.

Safety Guidelines and Wearer Advice for LARP and Events

While this costume is an excellent choice for re-enactment, historical festivals, and archery tournaments, please remain mindful of basic safety guidelines during use. The fabrics used are not treated with flame-retardant chemicals. We strongly warn you against moving close to open campfires, forge hearths, or ballroom candles. The long tail of the hood, the flowing hems of the coat, and especially the ostrich feather on the hat can easily catch a stray spark and ignite, which could lead to severe burns. When navigating forested terrain, exercise extra caution so that the long coat does not get caught on briars or low branches. Please note that additional accessories shown in the photographs, such as the leather belt, pouch, and shoes, are not included in this package.

Recommended Accessories for Your Renaissance Collection

To achieve a completely flawless and historically accurate appearance of a Renaissance marksman from around the year 1500, we recommend pairing this costume with a robust leather belt featuring a period-appropriate brass buckle and a hand-sewn leather belt pouch to store your modern essentials. As the ideal weapon accessory for this set, a traditional English longbow crafted from ash or yew wood and a historical hunting hanger or dagger worn in a leather sheath at the hip aligns perfectly with the hunting and military etiquette of the era.
