Men's Renaissance Tavern Keeper Costume with Striped Slops and Beret

Historical Context and Occasions for Wear

This type of garment draws heavy inspiration from the fashion of the 16th century, during the Renaissance period. At this time, townsfolk, wealthy artisans, and court staff dressed in practical yet often very brightly coloured clothes. Distinctive striping and slashing were typical of mercenary soldiers (Landsknechts), but this flamboyant style soon permeated the everyday civilian wardrobe. The ensemble consists of a doublet with extended peplums, voluminous knee-length breeches (known as slops or trunk hose), and a stylish beret. The costume is absolutely ideal for historical reenactment, as a theatrical costume, for Renaissance faires, or live-action role-playing (LARP).

Material Composition and Proper Care

The entire costume is made from high-quality materials, specifically 100% cotton. The dark vest portion of the doublet is sewn from duvetyn—a sturdy cotton fabric with a dense nap that faithfully imitates period velvet, holds its shape excellently, and provides pleasant warmth. The striped sleeves and breeches are made from classic, breathable cotton canvas. To preserve the rich colours and the quality of the braiding, we recommend machine washing the costume at a maximum of 30 °C (86 °F) on a gentle cycle. Avoid using a tumble dryer and harsh bleaches. Iron it ideally while slightly damp on a medium setting, and always inside out. Please note that the leather footwear shown in the photographs is not included.
