Late Medieval Hand-and-a-Half Sword Oakeshott Type XVa with Embossed Scabbard

Design and Historical Background

Type XVa swords emerged as a direct response to the advancement of plate armor. Classic cutting blades were losing effectiveness against hardened plates, so swordsmiths focused on the thrust. The blade of this sword features a characteristic diamond cross-section, which gives it exceptional stiffness and rigidity. The distinct distal taper ensures that the point of balance lies close to the guard, making the sword surprisingly light and maneuverable in the hand. Historically, the narrow and stiff point was designed to penetrate gaps in plate armor or burst through chainmail.

The hilt consists of a wood core covered in genuine light brown leather, featuring a prominent central riser for a more secure grip. The crossguard is slightly curved towards the blade (Type 8 style), allowing for better trapping of an opponent's blade. A unique feature is the "fishtail" or lobed pommel, which allows for comfortable gripping with the second hand and serves as an effective striking surface in close-quarters combat.

Scabbard and Craftsmanship

The sword comes with a luxurious scabbard that is a work of art in itself. Made from a leather-covered wood core, it is decorated with an embossing technique featuring convex patterns and heraldic motifs. The integrated suspension system with brass buckles allows for easy attachment to a belt and adjustment of the ideal drawing angle.

Material and Maintenance

The blade is forged from spring steel, tempered to a hardness of approximately 49–53 HRC. This ensures the sword is resilient but retains its edge. The steel requires regular care.

Care Instructions: Since this is high-carbon (not stainless) steel, it is essential to protect the blade from moisture. Wipe it with a dry cloth after every use or touch and coat it with a preservative oil (e.g., WD-40, gun oil, or 3-in-1 oil). Treat leather parts with beeswax-based conditioners to prevent cracking.

Safety Warnings

This sword is a fully functional replica. The blade may be supplied sharp. Although the material is high quality, a sword with a sharp edge is not intended for "edge-on-edge" contact sparring or rough handling that would lead to edge notches. Please exercise extreme caution when handling. Using the sword for cutting practice is at your own risk. Neither the manufacturer nor the seller is responsible for injuries caused by improper use.
