Renaissance Plate Armour Cuirass (Breastplate & Backplate) – 16 Gauge Steel

Design and Features

Crafted from 1.6 mm (approx. 16 gauge) mild steel, this armor strikes a great balance between durability and weight.

  • Adjustability: The front and back plates are secured together using sturdy leather straps and antique-finish brass buckles located at the shoulders and waist. This allows for a customizable fit to accommodate different body shapes and padding thicknesses.
  • Safety edges: All edges around the neck, armholes, and waist are flanged (rolled). This traditional technique strengthens the armor against impacts and ensures there are no sharp edges to damage your gambeson or skin.
  • Finish: The exterior is polished steel, while the interior is blackened to provide resistance against rust from perspiration and humidity.

Historical Context

This style of cuirass is typical of the 16th century, the age of the Landsknecht and the pike square. Unlike the complex, fitted armor of high medieval knights, this is "munitions grade" armor—produced in larger quantities to equip armies. Its rounded (globose) shape was engineered to deflect pike thrusts and sword blows away from the vital organs.

Maintenance and Care

* Rust Prevention: As this is made of mild steel, it is not rust-proof. Always wipe the armor dry after use and apply a protective oil (such as **Ballistol**, WD-40, or mineral oil) to both the outside and the blackened inside. * Leather Care: Check the straps regularly and treat them with leather conditioner to prevent cracking.

Sizing and Safety Note

* Measurements: The chest size starts at approx. 120 cm (47 inches). This size assumes you are wearing a **gambeson** (padded jacket) or chainmail underneath. Please measure yourself *while wearing your padding* to ensure a proper fit. Wearing plate armor without padding is uncomfortable and unsafe. * Usage: While sturdy, this 16 gauge steel armor is designed for **LARP, stage combat, and light sparring**. It is **not rated for full-contact medieval combat** (such as Buhurt or Battle of the Nations), which typically requires hardened steel and thicker gauges. We recommend pairing this cuirass with a **Morion helmet** and **articulated gauntlets** to complete the Renaissance soldier look.
