Crusader Great Helm with Brass Cross | 12th–13th Century
Construction and Design
Historically known as the Great Helm or Barrel Helm, this piece features a characteristic cylindrical shape with a flat top. It is constructed from mild steel plates joined by sturdy rivets. The dominant feature is the massive brass cross on the front, evoking the symbolism of the Templars or other Crusader orders. Historically, this cross served not only a spiritual purpose but also reinforced the front of the helm against strikes.
You will appreciate the practical details:
- Ocularium (Eye Slits): The narrow horizontal slits are designed to protect the eyes from lance points and arrows while providing sufficient visibility for combat awareness.
- Ventilation: The lower face plate features cross-shaped breathing holes (ventails) to facilitate airflow and prevent overheating.
- Liner: Inside, you will find an adjustable fabric liner with a leather suspension system and a leather chin strap with a brass buckle, ensuring the helm stays securely in place during action.

Historical Context
Great Helms became the standard on European battlefields between the late 12th and early 14th centuries. They were the answer to the need for better head protection against heavy cavalry charges and massive blows, where older nasal helms were no longer sufficient. Although they provided excellent protection, the trade-off was limited visibility and hearing. Therefore, knights often donned them only moments before the clash. This helmet style is inextricably linked with the era of the Crusades and knightly tournaments.
Maintenance and Care
To keep this armor in pristine condition and rust-free, it requires regular care:
- Storage: Store the helm in a dry place. Moisture is the enemy of steel.
- Cleaning: Wipe the surface with a dry cloth after every use (even after trying it on). Sweat is acidic and can cause rust quickly.
- Preservation: Regularly coat the steel with a mineral oil or a spray like WD-40. The brass parts can be polished to restore shine, but be careful not to stain the steel.
Note: This is a mild steel replica. While suitable for reenactment, stage combat, and LARP, please check with your group's safety officer regarding steel thickness requirements for full-contact fighting (Buhurt).
