Late Medieval Steel Gorget with Articulated Bevor – 18 Gauge
Design and Features
This neck armour is crafted from 18-gauge mild steel, striking a balance between durability and weight. The design features a rigid gorget base that sits comfortably on the shoulders, protecting the collarbone area. Riveted to the front is an articulated bevor (chin guard). This movable plate can be lowered when you need to speak clearly, drink, or catch your breath, and quickly raised for maximum protection during combat simulations.
The integrated leather straps are a key feature for building a full harness. Straps extending to the sides are designed to secure your spaulders or pauldrons, preventing them from shifting. Additional straps on the front and back allow you to attach the gorget directly to a breastplate and backplate.
Historical Significance
This style of neck protection became prominent in the 15th century. As helmets like the sallet became popular, which often left the lower face exposed, the articulated bevor became a critical piece of equipment. It provided the necessary protection for the throat and chin against upward thrusts and cuts while maintaining the flexibility required for active warfare.

Care and Maintenance
To ensure your armour lasts for years, proper maintenance is essential:
- Rust Prevention: Being made of mild steel, this item requires regular oiling. Use mineral oil, gun oil, or a dedicated armour preservative.
- Storage: Store in a dry environment. Avoid storing in damp basements or leaving it in a wet kit bag.
- Leather Care: Treat the straps with leather conditioner to prevent them from drying out and becoming brittle.
Safety Note: While sturdy, 18-gauge mild steel is intended for LARP, stage combat, and light historical fencing. It is NOT recommended for full-contact heavy combat (Buhurt/HMB), where thicker or hardened steel is required for safety.
