Red Linen Viking Hood (Cowl) Skjoldehamn
Appearance and Cut Inspired by History
This Viking hood features the characteristic cut with an extended point (or liripipe), giving it an authentic Norse look. The generous collar transitions smoothly into a shoulder covering that tapers to a point at the front and back. The deep red colour and the natural texture of the linen fabric emphasize the historical character of the garment. The cut of the hood is faithfully based on the original archaeological find and is constructed from thoughtfully joined rectangular and triangular fabric panels, ensuring comfortable wear and the typical silhouette.
Ideal Occasions for the Skjoldehamn Hood
This Skjoldehamn linen hood is the perfect addition to your costume for a wide variety of events. You'll stand out at Viking festivals, medieval fairs, LARP battles, and during historical reenactment of the Viking Age and Early Medieval period (approx. 9th to 11th century). Thanks to the breathable linen, it is particularly suitable for summer events, where it will protect you from the sun while ensuring comfort even in higher temperatures.
Who Wore Similar Hoods and When?
Hoods, often referred to as cowls, were a common and practical part of clothing in Northern Europe during the Viking Age and Early Middle Ages. They were worn by men and women of various social classes. Primarily, they served as protection against inclement weather – wind, rain, and cold. The original Skjoldehamn hood found archaeologically was made of wool, which provided excellent insulation. This linen version retains the authentic cut of the original but is adapted for greater comfort in warm weather, where you will appreciate the cooling properties of linen.
A Piece of History: The Skjoldehamn Find
The original hood, on which this replica is based, was discovered in 1936 in a bog near Skjoldehamn on the Norwegian island of Andøya. It is one of the best-preserved textile finds from the Viking Age. Along with the hood, other garments such as a tunic, trousers, and even remnants of shoes were found in the grave. Radiocarbon dating placed the find in the period of approximately 995–1050 AD. This discovery provided valuable insights into the fashion and textile technologies of the time.
Material and Its Advantages
The hood is made from 100% linen with a fabric weight of 150 g/m². Linen is a natural, strong, and highly durable material, known for its exceptional breathability and its ability to effectively wick moisture away from the body. On hot summer days, it has a pleasant cooling effect while also providing protection from direct sunlight. Linen fabric is also naturally antibacterial and hypoallergenic, which increases wearing comfort, even for those with sensitive skin.
