Who Wore Similar Hoods and When?

Hoods, often referred to as cowls, were a common and practical part of clothing in Northern Europe during the Viking Age and Early Middle Ages. They were worn by men and women of various social classes. Primarily, they served as protection against inclement weather – wind, rain, and cold. The original Skjoldehamn hood found archaeologically was made of wool, which provided excellent insulation. This linen version retains the authentic cut of the original but is adapted for greater comfort in warm weather, where you will appreciate the cooling properties of linen.

A Piece of History: The Skjoldehamn Find

The original hood, on which this replica is based, was discovered in 1936 in a bog near Skjoldehamn on the Norwegian island of Andøya. It is one of the best-preserved textile finds from the Viking Age. Along with the hood, other garments such as a tunic, trousers, and even remnants of shoes were found in the grave. Radiocarbon dating placed the find in the period of approximately 995–1050 AD. This discovery provided valuable insights into the fashion and textile technologies of the time.

The hood is made from 100% linen with a fabric weight of 150 g/m². Linen is a natural, strong, and highly durable material, known for its exceptional breathability and its ability to effectively wick moisture away from the body. How to Care for Your Hood

To ensure your Skjoldehamn linen hood serves you well for a long time and retains its original beauty and quality, we recommend the following care:

• Washing: Machine wash on a gentle cycle at up to 40°C (104°F). We recommend using a mild detergent.
• Ironing: Iron while still slightly damp at a medium temperature (the setting for linen, usually marked with two dots).
• Bleaching and Drying: Do not use chemical bleaches. Do not tumble dry, as the material may shrink. Dry flat or hanging.
