Gothic Cotton Hood with Long Liripipe and Scalloped Hem
Historical Context and Usage of the Hood
The hood, also known by the German term gugel or the French chaperon, was an absolutely essential part of the medieval wardrobe. This specific cut is loosely inspired by the fashion of the High and Late Middle Ages (14th and 15th centuries). Originally a purely practical garment protecting the head and shoulders from bad weather, it gradually transformed into a fashion statement over time. The long back tail (liripipe) and the decoratively cut edges (dagging) served to demonstrate the wealth and social status of the wearer. The hood is ideal for historical reenactment, fantasy role-playing games (LARP), theatrical performances, or autumnal period markets. We recommend complementing this product with a simple linen under-tunic and a leather belt corresponding to 14th-century fashion. Please note that the tunic shown under the hood in the accompanying photographs is not included in the delivery.
Care and Maintenance of Materials
The hood is made of duvetyne, which is a one hundred per cent cotton fabric with a specially brushed surface that resembles fine wool broadcloth or velvet. This material is warm, breathable, and durable. To ensure the fabric retains its rich colours and soft texture, we recommend leaving the cleaning to a professional dry cleaner. If necessary, it can be washed very gently by hand in lukewarm water (up to 30 °C / 86 °F). Never wash the hood in a washing machine and do not tumble dry it, to prevent the cotton from shrinking. Any dust and dirt on the surface can be most easily removed with a soft clothes brush, always brushing in the direction of the nap.
