Gothic Dagged Liripipe Hood with Heraldic Embroidery

Historical Context and Origins of the Medieval Hood

This iconic type of headwear, known in Central Europe as a kápě and widely referred to as a Gugel or Chaperon, was an essential staple of Western and Central European fashion from the 14th to the early 15th century. Originally a practical garment for laborers and travelers to shield them from rain and wind, it evolved during the late Middle Ages into an extravagant fashion statement across all social classes. Deluxe versions featuring dagged edges (known as dags or Zaddeln) and intricate embroidery were the exclusive privilege of wealthy burghers, courtiers, and knights. The exaggeratedly long hood tail, the liripipe, was often fashionably wrapped around the neck like a scarf or left to dangle freely, serving as a status symbol that indicated the wearer did not engage in manual labor.

Premium Material and Craftsmanship Details

The hood is tailored from premium duvetine (100% cotton). As experienced reenactors, we highly prize this fabric because it is a densely woven material with a gently brushed nap. Visually and texturally, it flawlessly mimics expensive medieval woolen cloth while maintaining the excellent breathability and comfort of cotton. The front cape is cut into elegant rounded tabs. These tabs feature alternating, precise yellow (golden) embroidery depicting heraldic crosses and stylized Gothic foliage motifs. Each tab is further accented at its point with a decorative metal stud, lending a luxurious, martial weight to the garment. The back of the hood tapers seamlessly into the iconic long tail.

Technical Specifications and Sizing Chart

Selecting the correct size is essential to ensure the hood sits comfortably on your head and the cape drapes naturally over your shoulders. Please measure your head circumference horizontally across your forehead and above your ears to find your perfect fit.

Care and Maintenance Instructions

To ensure this splendid garment serves you well for many seasons and to keep the embroidery and studs looking pristine, we recommend adhering to the following guidelines:

  • Washing: Wash exclusively by hand or in a washing machine using a highly delicate / handwash cycle at temperatures up to 30°C (approx. 86°F). Always turn the hood inside out before washing to protect the metal studs and embroidery from rubbing against the drum.
  • Detergents: Use only mild liquid detergents formulated for colored fabrics. Avoid bleaches, aggressive stain removers, or fabric softeners, which can degrade the brushed texture of the duvetine.
  • Drying: Never tumble dry this product. After washing, gently press out excess water using a towel (do not wring forcefully) and lay the hood flat on a drying rack in the shade. Direct sunlight can cause the deep blue dye to fade over time.
  • Ironing: Iron only from the reverse side (inside out) on a medium heat setting suitable for cotton. Never run a hot iron directly over the front side where the embroidery and studs are located.

Modern Application and Safety Warnings

This garment is an ideal choice for historical fencing, theatrical productions, cosplay, and fantasy LARP. When worn during chilly event evenings, the hood provides excellent thermal comfort. However, please remember that cotton is a highly flammable material. Exercise extreme caution when standing near campfires, handling torches, or around festival pyrotechnics. Flying sparks can instantly burn holes into the fabric. Additionally, this hood is not designed to serve as heavy padding underneath a steel helmet and does not replace a thick padded arming cap for full-contact armored combat.

Recommended Accessories for Your Garb Set

Please note that the tunic visible under the hood in the photographs, as well as any other accessories shown, are not included in the package. You will receive the standalone hood only. To assemble a complete, historically harmonious 14th-century costume, we recommend pairing this hood with a wool or linen Gothic tunic in a contrasting color (such as charcoal grey or wine red) and a simple leather belt with a brass buckle that beautifully complements the metal studs on the hood's dags.

This Cape decorated with appliques can be made in various colors according to these sample cards. Please note the requested color(s) into your order, in the field for your comment. Please specify always (1) the number of the sample card, (2) letter of the color, and (3) description of the colour (Example: 04-F-blue).
