Late Medieval Wool Hood with Liripipe and Dagged Edge
The Iconic Style of the Late Middle Ages
This historical head covering faithfully replicates the period's cut. It consists of a hood that seamlessly transitions into a mantle covering the shoulders. It is made from durable wool that will keep you warm while remaining breathable. The design is defined by two key features:
The Liripipe (Long Tail)
The exceptionally long tail hanging from the back of the hood is a hallmark of late medieval fashion. It was not merely for decoration; its length often reflected the social status and wealth of the owner. It can be worn hanging loose, wrapped around the neck like a scarf, or tucked into a belt for a different look.
The Dagged Hem
The bottom edge of the shoulder mantle is finished with a decorative scalloped pattern, a technique known as "dagging." This detail, resembling leaves or lobes, adds visual interest to the hood and was highly popular during the period.
Ideal for Any Occasion
The woolen hood is an incredibly versatile accessory suitable for a wide range of occasions and characters. It will perfectly complement your attire at medieval fairs, LARP events, historical markets, theatrical performances, or battle reenactments. It is ideal for portraying townsfolk, artisans, travelers, hunters, and even noble lords and ladies.

A Glimpse into History: The Fashion and Function of the Liripipe
The hood, often referred to by its German name "gugel" in historical sources, was one of the most common head coverings for both men and women across all social classes in the 14th and 15th centuries. While common folk wore simple hoods with short tails, the nobility and wealthy townsfolk flaunted hoods with extravagantly long liripipes and intricately cut dagged hems. Interestingly, the long tail was not just for show. Its owners used it very creatively—wrapping it around their necks like a scarf for extra warmth, or even twisting it around their head to form a turban-like headdress known as a "chaperon."
Care Instructions
Wool is a natural material that deserves gentle care. With the proper maintenance, you can ensure your hood will serve you for many years.
- Washing: We strongly recommend gentle hand washing in lukewarm water (up to 30°C / 86°F) with a wool-specific detergent. Do not wring the hood; just gently squeeze the water out. Alternatively, professional dry cleaning is a safe option.
- Drying: Never tumble dry, nor dry in direct sunlight or on a heater. After washing, roll the hood in a dry towel to absorb excess water, then lay it flat to dry.
- Ironing: Iron only when necessary, using a damp cloth between the iron and the garment on the lowest heat setting (wool setting).
