The historical inspiration for this hood, often referred to as a chaperon or gugel, dates back to the High and Late Middle Ages (predominantly the 14th and 15th centuries) across Western and Central Europe. During this era, the fashion of the so-called mi-parti (two or more coloured garments) reached its absolute zenith. The long back tail, known as a liripipe, was an exceptionally fashionable accessory. For added practicality, people would sometimes wrap it around their necks like a warming scarf. The decorative cut-out edges (known as dagging), on the other hand, represented a contemporary symbol of playfulness, extravagance, and wealth. Historically, similar hoods were worn by people of all social classes as reliable protection against foul weather, but these striking, multi-coloured velvet variations were particularly favoured by travelling entertainers, musicians, and court jesters.

Fabric Care and Warnings

As the garment is made of a blend of polyester, cotton, and elastane, it requires gentle care. We recommend washing the product exclusively by hand in lukewarm water using a mild detergent. Strictly avoid aggressive bleaches and dry cleaning. The hood must not be tumble dried, as this could cause irreversible damage to the texture of the velvet. Allow it to air dry while laid out flat.
