Crusader Tabard / Knight's Surcoat with Cross, Black

Don this classic knight's tabard and become a symbol of honour, faith, and courage. This black surcoat, made from strong and durable 100% cotton, is designed to be worn comfortably over chainmail or plate armour. It proudly bears a striking red cross appliqué on the chest, immediately signalling your allegiance to an order of holy warriors. Whether you're heading to a LARP, a historical festival, or a cosplay event, this tabard is a fundamental element of any crusader or paladin costume.

For Valiant Knights and Holy Warriors

This garment is ideal for a wide range of characters and occasions. It serves perfectly for:

  • LARP Events: As part of a knightly order's uniform, a costume for a paladin, cleric, or a Templar-inspired warrior.
  • Historical Festivals and Reenactments: To portray a crusader on an expedition to the Holy Land or a knight in a medieval tournament.
  • Cosplay and Theatre: Perfect for costumes of characters from historical and fantasy films, games, and series.

The Surcoat – Badge of a Knight

The surcoat (also known as a tabard) became popular during the Crusades. It served several practical functions. Primarily, it protected chainmail from the scorching sun in desert regions, preventing it from overheating. It also served as a "uniform" – its colour and the symbol on the chest clearly identified a knight and his affiliation with a particular order or lord on the chaotic battlefield.
Fun Fact: Although a red cross pattée on a black field is more of a fantasy combination, it is inspired by real crusading orders. Different orders had their specific crosses – for example, the Hospitallers had an eight-pointed cross, the Teutonic Knights a black one, and the Templars a simple red cross (usually on a white field). This tabard gives you the freedom to create your own hero without being bound by strict historical accuracy.

Functional Cut and Detailed Dimensions

The tabard is made from 100% cotton fabric that is both strong and breathable. It has a simple, loose, sleeveless cut to ensure it doesn't restrict movement in combat. Long splits in the front and back guarantee complete freedom of movement, even when on horseback. A red cross pattée appliqué is carefully sewn onto the chest.

How to Care for Your Tabard

We recommend machine washing on a gentle cycle at up to 30°C (86°F), ideally inside out to protect the appliqué. Do not use harsh bleaches. Do not tumble dry, to prevent the material from shrinking. If necessary, iron on a medium setting, but avoid ironing directly over the appliqué – iron it from the reverse side.
