Early Crusader Flat Top Helmet with Cross Faceplate 2mm Steel

Historical Context and Armour Evolution

At the end of the 12th century, during the period of the Third Crusade, classic Norman helmets with an open face and a simple nasal guard were no longer providing sufficient protection against increasingly advanced weaponry. This early flat top helmet (often referred to as a transition to the Great Helm or Topfhelm) represents a key evolutionary link in armour development. The prominent, riveted faceplate provided the warrior with excellent facial and neck protection from slashing and stabbing wounds. The cross-shaped ventilation holes not only ensured a much-needed supply of air into the enclosed helmet but also clearly declared the wearer's allegiance to the knightly orders fighting in the Holy Land.

Construction and Safe Practical Use

The individual parts of this helmet are precisely hand-beaten from 2 mm (0.08 inches) thick mild steel and firmly connected by robust rivets. Inside, there is a high-quality, riveted textile liner that can be adjusted using leather laces, along with a strong cowhide chin strap fitted with a brass buckle. Thanks to this material thickness, the helmet is battle-ready and suitable for stage combat, historical fencing (HEMA), LARP, and historical re-enactment. Please note, however, that this is not certified protective armour designed for extreme full-contact sports such as buhurt (Battle of the Nations), where even thicker materials and modern hidden padding are strictly required. For your maximum safety, always ensure the chin strap is properly tightened so the helmet does not slip off during sudden movements.

How to Properly Care for Your Armour

Because the helmet is made of classic mild steel (not stainless steel), it is naturally susceptible to air moisture and rust formation. For it to serve you well and bring you joy for many seasons, regular maintenance is essential. After every training session, battle, or exposure to rain, wipe the helmet thoroughly dry with a soft cloth and apply a thin layer of gun or silicone oil (e.g., Ballistol) to the metal parts. Allow the internal cotton liner and leather strap to dry naturally and slowly at room temperature after wearing; avoid drying near direct heat sources, which could dry out and crack the leather.
