Helmschmied Gothic Sallet with Articulated Bevor – c. 1495 Replica
Design and Features
What sets this sallet apart is the integrated neck protection. The bevor (gorget) is riveted directly to the helmet but remains fully articulated. The visor opens upwards, while the bevor drops downwards to allow you to breathe freely or speak when not in combat. Both parts can be locked shut securely, ensuring they stay in place during action. For modern safety standards, particularly in LARP, the eye slit is fitted with a wire mesh. However, if you pursue strict historical accuracy, this mesh can be easily removed with wire cutters.
The helmet does not feature a built-in suspension liner, but a separate padded cap is included with every purchase. For the best fit and shock absorption, we recommend customizing the interior with additional padding tailored to your head shape.
Historical Context
The late 15th century was the golden age of Gothic armour, characterised by elegant fluting and sharp lines. Lorenz Helmschmied was a master of this style in Augsburg. The fluting you see on this replica mimics the original technique used to strengthen the steel plate without adding excessive weight, whilst also deflecting blows. This style of sallet would have been worn by knights and heavy infantrymen across the Holy Roman Empire.

Care Instructions
To keep your armour looking its best and to prevent rust, always store it in a dry environment. After use, wipe off any sweat or moisture and apply a light coat of oil or wax designed for metal protection. If minor rust spots appear, they can be buffed out with fine steel wool/abrasive fleece and re-oiled.
Safety Warning
While constructed from sturdy 1.6 mm (16 gauge) steel, this helmet is not intended for full-contact medieval combat such as Buhurt or Battle of the Nations. It is perfectly suitable for re-enactment, LARP, stage combat, and costume use. We strongly advise wearing a thick padded arming cap or coif underneath for proper protection and comfort.
For a complete look, consider pairing this helmet with a set of our articulating gauntlets.
