Dark Brown Medieval Leather Mules with Tooling
Historical Context and Practical Use
Elongated shoe toes, also known as poulaines or crakows, experienced their greatest boom in the 14th and 15th centuries during the Gothic period. Although these mules are a more moderate version, they clearly refer to the aesthetics of the High and Late Middle Ages. In the Middle Ages and the early modern period, mule-type footwear (often without a solid heel) was widely used as comfortable indoor shoes in burgher and noble households, or as bathhouse and camp slippers. Today, you will perfectly utilise these mules at historical festivals, reenactments, LARP, and cosplay as comfortable camp footwear that is easy to slip on.
Leather Footwear Care
To ensure your mules serve you as long as possible and retain their great appearance, they require proper care. The shoes are treated from the workshop with a beeswax leather balm. We recommend that you regularly lubricate the leather with a high-quality leather balm or oil. The balm softens the leather, waterproofs it against morning dew, and extends its lifespan. After applying the balm, the leather may darken slightly, which is a natural phenomenon with organic materials. If you do not have special wax at hand, ordinary brown or colourless shoe polish will do, allowing you to easily disguise minor scuffs on the toe caused by normal wear.
Safe Usage Principles and What to Avoid
These mules have a smooth leather sole, which is historically authentic, but can be slippery on modern surfaces (tiles, wet grass). Therefore, tread carefully. Avoid wearing the mules in heavy rain, deep mud, or soaking them in water – the leather sole could quickly lose its strength and shape. Likewise, never dry soaked leather shoes near a direct heat source (open fire, radiator), as the leather could harden and crack. Dry them slowly at room temperature, ideally stuffed with newspaper.
Choosing the Size and Custom Adjustments
These medieval mules are supplied in standard European (EU) sizes. If you opt for the custom-made variant, it is necessary to provide the exact measurements of your foot when ordering. If you wear orthopaedic insoles and want custom-made shoes, please send us these insoles by post. The shoemaker will carefully fit them into the mules so that the shoe fits you absolutely perfectly.
