The term seax (or scramasax) refers to a single-edged knife or short sword that was an indispensable part of the armoury of Germanic tribes and Vikings from the Migration Period through the High Middle Ages. It served not only as a formidable and reliable secondary weapon in close-quarters combat—especially when warriors crashed into tight shield walls—but also as a versatile tool for daily heavy camp chores.
