The Lizard as a Symbol in History
Guardian of the Home and Bringer of Luck
The use of animal motifs on doors and gates is rooted deep in the past. Lizards and reptiles, in general, are seen as powerful symbols in many cultures worldwide. Thanks to their ability to regenerate (regrowing a tail) and their love for the sun, they are often associated with rebirth, life force, adaptability, and good fortune. In some traditions, reptiles were considered guardians of the home and bearers of good news, protecting the dwelling from evil.
Fun Fact: Symbol of the Sun and Dreams
In ancient Greece and Rome, the lizard was a symbol of wisdom and luck. In Egypt, it was associated with the sun god Ra, representing divine wisdom and protection. In many indigenous cultures, the lizard is also seen as a guide to the dream world and a symbol of inner sight. To have one on your door can, therefore, symbolically mean an invitation for good fortune and protection into your home.
Installation and Care
How to Install the Handle
Installation is straightforward, as four matching rustic-head screws are already included in the package. Place the handle on the door or gate, align it to the desired position, and mark the location of the four mounting holes with a pencil. For wooden doors, we recommend pre-drilling pilot holes with a drill bit thinner than the screw's diameter to prevent the wood from splitting. Then, firmly screw the handle in place using the provided screws.
How to Care for the Handle
The handle's surface is treated with a traditional oil-blackened finish, making it very resistant to weathering. For regular maintenance, simply wipe the handle with a dry or slightly damp cloth. To restore the protective layer and revive its appearance, especially when used outdoors, you can occasionally (for example, once a year) wipe the surface with linseed oil or beeswax.
Important Note: This handle is primarily designed as a decorative pull handle. Although it is made of solid steel, do not use it as a load-bearing safety or support element (e.g., as a stair rail handle).
