Substantial Handle with a Traditional Appearance

The handle is made from hand-worked structural steel. Its visible face has a pronounced irregular texture intended to resemble traditional manual metalworking. Minor variations and surface irregularities are not defects but deliberate features of its rustic character.

The grip arches away from the mounting surface, leaving practical clearance for your fingers. At either end, it flows into a rectangular fixing plate with one pre-drilled screw hole. The blackened and oiled protective finish accentuates the relief of the steel whilst helping to reduce the effects of moisture.

This black metal door handle is a fixed pull rather than a moving lever handle. It does not incorporate a latch, lock or other operating mechanism. It can be installed on doors, cupboards, garden gates, shutters, chests and other substantial timber fittings.

Historical Inspiration

The shape is inspired by simple architectural and furniture fittings used in Europe from approximately the 13th to the 15th century. During the Middle Ages, doors, gates and storage chests were fitted with practical metal components produced by local craftsmen according to the available material and the requirements of each customer.

Alongside ring-shaped door knockers, fixed arched pull handles were used to provide a firm handhold. Substantial door furniture was not merely functional. On town houses, gateways and agricultural buildings, decorative metalwork could also demonstrate the status of the owner. This product is a medieval-style door pull rather than an exact replica of a specific archaeological find.

How to Install the Door Pull

• Before installation, make sure the mounting surface is sufficiently strong and check that no cable, pipe or other service passes through the drilling area.
• Position the handle where required and ensure that it is straight. The approximate centre-to-centre spacing of the fixing holes is 16.3 cm or 6.4 in.
• Mark both holes with a pencil. In hard or seasoned timber, we recommend drilling pilot holes slightly narrower than the core diameter of the screws.
• Secure the handle with two screws, tightening them gradually and evenly. Do not overtighten them, as this could damage the timber or protective finish.
• For heavy doors, soft timber or thin panels, use longer screws or through-bolts suited to the particular mounting surface.

Care and Safe Use

Wipe the surface regularly with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth. Do not use wire brushes, abrasive pads or aggressive chemical cleaners. For outdoor installations, we recommend applying a thin coat of suitable metal oil or protective wax several times a year. Make sure the surface is clean and completely dry before treatment.

Check the mounting screws periodically and tighten them when necessary. Do not use the handle as a safety grab rail, step, climbing aid or load-bearing anchor point. It is not designed to support a person's body weight or arrest a fall. Wear eye protection during installation and always use tools and fixings appropriate for the mounting surface.

Recommended Accessories

To create a coordinated door arrangement, we recommend combining the handle with black strap hinges, a rustic door bolt, traditional latch, decorative nails or ring door knocker. Fittings with simple geometric forms are particularly suitable for projects inspired by the 13th to 15th century. On substantial gates, the pull can also be paired with decorative corner straps and large black fixing screws.
