Rustic Handle Made from Hand-Worked Steel

The handle is made from hand-worked structural steel. Its flat steel profile has been spirally twisted through the central gripping section to create a decorative torsion pattern. This gives the fitting a sculpted appearance whilst providing a textured surface that sits securely in your hand.

The grip is permanently joined to an elongated rectangular mounting plate with rounded corners. A pre-drilled screw hole is positioned at either end. The bowed profile leaves practical clearance for your fingers without making the handle appear excessively bulky on the door.

The blackened and oiled surface emphasises the twisted profile and helps protect the steel from moisture. As the metal is worked by hand, individual pieces may vary slightly in surface texture, shape or shade. These differences are not defects but natural features of the rustic finish.

Suitable for Doors, Gates and Furniture

This fixed door pull contains no latch, lock or moving mechanism. It serves as a simple pulling grip for opening doors, cupboard fronts and drawers. Depending on the construction and required appearance, it may be installed vertically or horizontally.

The fitting is suitable for internal doors, shutters, lighter gates and garden doors. It can also be mounted on cupboards, sideboards, chests, large drawers or sliding doors. Its black surface creates a particularly effective contrast against natural, limewashed, weathered or dark-stained timber.

Historical Inspiration

The design draws upon straightforward European door and furniture fittings used from approximately the 15th to the 17th century. Fixed bow-shaped handles were fitted to doors, gates, shutters, chests and practical household furniture. Their construction was durable, easy to use and could be repaired by a local metalworker when necessary.

Torsion, or the spiral twisting of a metal bar, was a popular decorative technique during the late medieval and early modern periods. Similar motifs appeared on grilles, railings, candle holders and chest ironwork. This handle is a historically inspired architectural fitting rather than an exact reproduction of a particular archaeological find.

How to Install the Door Pull

• Select a level and sufficiently strong mounting surface capable of withstanding the pulling force produced when opening the door.
• Before drilling, check that no electrical cable, pipe or other service passes through the installation area.
• Position the handle where required and align it vertically or horizontally.
• Mark the centres of both mounting holes. Their approximate centre-to-centre spacing is 13.7 cm or 5.4 in.
• In hard, old or seasoned timber, drill pilot holes narrower than the core diameter of the screws.
• Secure the handle with two screws, tightening them alternately so that the backplate sits evenly against the surface.
• Do not overtighten the screws, as this may damage the timber, thread or black finish.

Care and Safe Use

Wipe the handle regularly with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth, then dry it thoroughly. Do not use wire brushes, abrasive pads, acidic cleaners or aggressive degreasers. These may damage the blackened surface and encourage corrosion.

When used in damp surroundings, we recommend applying a thin layer of suitable metal oil or protective wax several times a year. Check the fixing screws and timber surface periodically. Do not use the handle as a safety handrail, step, climbing hold or load-bearing anchor. It is not intended to arrest a fall or support a person's body weight.

For a coordinated historic appearance, we recommend combining the handle with black strap hinges, a door bolt, rustic latch, decorative nails or ring door knocker. On cupboards and chests, it can also be paired with corner fittings and a historic-style lock.
