From the History of Blacksmithing
The technique of twisting metal bars is as old as blacksmithing itself. In the Middle Ages and the Baroque period, it was particularly popular for making grilles, railings, and of course, door hardware. The twist not only added strength to the steel but was also a sign of the blacksmith's high skill and an aesthetic element that gave a dynamic and elegant look to the finished products.
A Touch of Folklore: The Protective Power of the Spiral
In many cultures, it was believed that twisted shapes held protective power. The spiral and winding lines were thought to symbolically "entangle" and ward off evil spirits and negative energies, preventing them from entering the dwelling. Placing such an ornate handle on a door could, therefore, have had this hidden, superstitious meaning in addition to its practical and aesthetic function.
Installation and Care
How to Install the Handle
Installation is straightforward. The necessary eight screws, approximately 51 mm in length, are already included in the package. Place the handle in the desired position on the door or gate and mark the drill positions through the holes in the mounting plates. For wooden surfaces, we recommend pre-drilling smaller pilot holes to prevent the wood from splitting when inserting the screws. Then, mount the handle securely using the provided fixings.
How to Care for the Handle
The surface is treated with a traditional oil-blackening finish, which provides not only an authentic look but also a basic protective layer against the elements. For regular maintenance, simply wipe the handle with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Do not use any aggressive chemical cleaners, wire brushes, or abrasive pads, as they could damage the protective layer and initiate corrosion.
Important Notice
Although this door pull is made of solid steel, it is intended exclusively as door, gate, or furniture hardware. Do not use it as a safety grab bar, a stair rail for body weight support, or for hanging heavy objects.
