Medieval Italian Bellows Face Sallet Helmet of Mild Steel

Historical Context and Practical Use

This specific style of helmet, celebrated for its distinctive ridged visor resembling a blacksmith's bellows, saw immense popularity at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, particularly across Italy and Germany. The ridges on the visor served more than a mere aesthetic purpose; they were ingeniously designed to deflect downward blows and weapon strikes, whilst simultaneously offering the warrior vastly superior ventilation compared to flat visors. Sallets of this configuration were widely favoured by light and medium cavalry. Unlike the heavier enclosed armet, the sallet allowed the rider swift reaction times and barely restricted peripheral vision. Today, you will find this exceptional helmet perfect for historical reenactment, stage combat, theatrical performances, or LARP (Live Action Role-Playing). To achieve an impeccably authentic medieval appearance, we highly recommend pairing this helmet with a chainmail standard (pisan) and a well-fitted padded gambeson.

Armor Maintenance and Care

This helmet is shipped to you with a protective layer of oil to prevent corrosion during transit and storage. Before donning the helmet for the first time, we advise wiping away this factory oil using a clean, dry cloth or a gentle degreasing agent. Because mild steel is susceptible to rust, it is imperative to thoroughly dry the helmet, removing all traces of moisture and sweat after every use. Once clean, apply a thin, even coat of rust-preventative oil (such as WD-40 or Ballistol) to all metal surfaces, inside and out. Following this simple routine will drastically extend the lifespan of your armor and maintain its brilliantly polished finish for years to come.

Safety Warnings and Precautions

This helmet is expertly constructed from 16-gauge (1.5 mm) mild steel. While it is fully functional and provides substantial protection for standard scenic fencing, reenactment, or LARP, we must explicitly state that it is not designed for heavy full-contact combat sports (such as Buhurt, HMB, or Battle of the Nations). Receiving forceful, deliberate strikes from heavy blunt weapons could deform the steel and result in serious injury. Furthermore, although the helmet features a built-in cotton padded liner, we strongly recommend wearing an additional padded coif underneath to ensure maximum shock absorption and supreme wearing comfort.
