Luxurious Renaissance Leather Rapier Baldric with Fleur-de-lis Embossing
Symbolism and History
During the 16th and 17th centuries, over-the-shoulder carrying straps, known as baldrics, became not only a practical necessity for carrying increasingly heavy and long rapiers, but above all a prominent fashion statement. The nobility and elite soldiers, such as the royal musketeers, spared no expense in their decoration. Metal applications in the shape of the heraldic lily (Fleur-de-lis) held profound symbolic meaning. The lily was the sign of purity, light, and above all, the French monarchy. By wearing such a richly decorated hanger, a swordsman clearly demonstrated his high social status and refined taste.
Ingenious Construction and Adjustment
The baldric is worn cross-body over the chest. The carrying strap is fully adjustable in length using a massive, richly decorated buckle cast from a strong composite alloy. The lower widened part, the frog, is equipped with six separate leather straps with small decorative buckles. These straps serve to firmly and securely attach the scabbard of your weapon. Each strap can be individually loosened or tightened, allowing the hanger to perfectly adapt to different shapes and widths of scabbards, whether you own a narrow sword or a robust rapier.
Carrying swords or rapiers with completely bare blades is highly dangerous and the blade itself suffers from exposure to moisture. Therefore, we can make a custom leather scabbard tailored to your weapon to go with this baldric. If you decide for the version including the scabbard, please write the following dimensions in the notes of your order:
- Width and thickness of the blade right at the hilt (guard).
- Width and thickness of the blade 10 cm (4 inches) from the tip.
- The length of the blade to be protected by the scabbard (total internal depth of the scabbard).

Note: This product is handcrafted from genuine leather. It is a purely natural material. Minor variations in colour and surface texture are its natural characteristics. These slight imperfections do not reduce the utilitarian value of the product in any way. Each piece is thus, to some extent, a unique original. The delivery does not include the rapier shown in the images.
Leather Care and Safety Guidelines
To ensure the leather retains its noble beauty, suppleness, and strength, we recommend treating it regularly with a high-quality leather balm or beeswax. Never dry the leather near a direct heat source, such as a radiator or open fire, as it could harden and irreversibly crack. From a safety perspective, remember that the hanger is primarily designed for carrying weapons in a scabbard. If you do not have a scabbard and use a weapon with a sharp blade, you risk not only damaging the leather straps but, more importantly, causing serious injury to yourself and those around you.
We highly recommend complementing this magnificent baldric with an elegant wide-sleeved shirt and a period rapier from our extensive range, bringing your aristocratic look to absolute perfection.
