Dark Transitional Great Helm Godfried
Are you looking for that precise point in history when knights stopped relying solely on nasal helmets but hadn't yet sealed themselves into hermetically closed "buckets"? This helmet is a perfect example of the evolution of armoury in the late 13th century. It represents the transitional link when facial protection extended deep below the chin and began to encase the entire head. Thanks to its patinated, dark finish, this helm looks as if it has already survived many a crusade or rough skirmish. It is the ideal choice for your LARP costume or historical event if you want to look like a seasoned veteran who no longer cares for shine and pageantry. Further product information ...
Dark Transitional Great Helm Godfried
Evolution of Defence on the Battlefield
Structurally, this helmet is based on the classic Great Helms but retains elements of earlier types. Its dominant feature is the distinct face mask riveted to the skull of the helmet. The rows of rivets serve not only a structural function but also give the helmet a rugged, medieval industrial look. The eye slits and ventilation holes are positioned to ensure sufficient vision and airflow, which you will appreciate in the heat of battle. The dark finish (patina) protects the metal from rust better than a polished surface and adds authenticity to the piece.
Comfort and Usage
To ensure the helmet sits well on your head and doesn't slip with every movement, it is equipped with an adjustable leather liner inside. Naturally, it also includes a sturdy leather chin strap to secure the helm in place. Although it looks massive, it is made from steel sheet with a thickness of approx. 1 mm (approx. 19 gauge). This makes it a lightweight and comfortable choice for all-day wear at festivals or LARP battles, where you don't want to drag around extra kilos of steel.
Important Warning: Due to the material thickness (approx. 1 mm / 19 gauge), this is not protective armour suitable for full-contact combat such as Buhurt, HMB, or Battle of the Nations. The helmet is intended for LARP, theatrical fencing, film extras, or as a costume accessory. Hard impacts with steel weapons could cause deformation and injury.
Helmet Care
Even though the helmet has a patinated finish, it is still steel that requires care. Wipe it dry after every use to prevent sweat from causing corrosion. If you are not going to use it for a long time, preserve it with oil (e.g., WD-40 or gun oil). Store it in a dry place. For maximum comfort and hygiene, I recommend wearing a padded arming cap or a mail coif with padding underneath, which fills the space better and cushions impacts.
