Decorative Medieval Flail with Double Spiked Iron Balls
Historical Context and Weapon Origin
The flail, sometimes colloquially referred to as a chain mace or morning star on a chain, originated primarily by adapting ordinary agricultural tools into a devastating weapon. During the Middle Ages, the simple grain flail evolved into an instrument with tremendous kinetic power. The variant with two moving heads provided an even greater probability of scoring a hit and exerted an immensely strong psychological effect on the enemy. This meticulously executed replica faithfully imitates a one-handed cavalry or infantry weapon, whose chains could wrap around the edge of an opponent's shield and strike a hidden target.
Construction and Materials Used
The foundation of this replica is a handle measuring 44 cm (17.3 inches) in length, which is turned from solid wood. For a much more secure hold in the hand, it is fitted with a natural suede leather strip wrap along its length, and at its very end, there is a hole for potentially threading a securing lanyard. A metal fitting with a massive eyelet is firmly anchored to the upper end of the handle, from which two steel chains emerge. Each of these chains carries a striking head in the shape of a heavy iron ball equipped with sharp steel spikes, which historically served to pierce armour.
Safety Warnings and Practical Use
We strongly emphasise that the presented product is a purely decorative replica that is absolutely unsuitable for any combat. This flail is under no circumstances intended for practical use, contact stage fencing, HEMA tournaments, or the practice of combat techniques. The movement of two independent striking balls on chains is completely unpredictable, and even a small, careless swing carries the risk of very serious injury to yourself or your immediate surroundings. The weapon does, however, serve absolutely perfectly as an impressive and unmissable wall decoration or as a visual prop for LARP and historical parades.
Proper Care for Your Collector's Replica
To ensure your flail permanently retains its perfect historical appearance, we recommend occasionally wiping all metal parts (especially the steel chains, top fittings, and both spiked balls) lightly with a high-quality gun oil. This will reliably prevent the formation of unwanted surface rust. Additionally, it is highly advisable to treat the wooden handle and the leather wrap from time to time with a beeswax balsam, preventing these natural materials from drying out and ensuring they retain their long-term durability and beauty.
Along with this magnificent piece, we warmly recommend purchasing a decorated leather belt holder from our range, allowing you to carry the weapon proudly, safely, and comfortably during your costumed events.
