- Collectors and History Enthusiasts: Thanks to its detailed craftsmanship, this gorget is an excellent display piece for any collection.
Historical Context and Design
The plate gorget evolved in the late Middle Ages in response to the need for solid protection for the neck and throat, areas that remained vulnerable even when wearing a maille coif. In the 15th century, it became an integral part of the harness, serving two main functions: protection and as a load-bearing platform. Its anatomical shape effectively protected the collarbones and throat. At the same time, it became the anchor point to which the pauldrons were attached via straps, distributing their weight onto the warrior's shoulders and torso. This model faithfully replicates these principles—its two-piece construction with a hinge on one side and a pin-lock on the other allows it to be easily worn.
A Tidbit from History
The word "gorget" comes from the Old French word "gorge," meaning "throat." The gorget was such an important and iconic piece of armour that it was one of the last plate elements to survive, lasting into the 18th century. Long after knights in full armour had disappeared from the battlefield, military officers wore a small, often ornate gorget as a symbol of their status and rank.
