Construction and Functionality
This set includes one pair (left and right). Each piece is masterfully assembled from four wide upper lames protecting the shoulder joint and four smaller lames covering the upper arm. This articulated construction ensures that the plates slide into one another when you raise your arm, allowing for unrestricted movement during fencing. The individual parts are connected by sturdy rivets and leather straps.
The pauldrons are made of 1.2 mm (18 gauge) mild steel. This thickness is the ideal compromise between durability and weight – the armour is strong enough for LARP and theatrical fencing but won't weigh you down unnecessarily. A leather strap with a buckle at the top serves for attachment (to a gorget or cuirass), and another strap at the bottom secures it around the arm.

Historical Context and Usage
Typologically, these pauldrons correspond to late medieval plate armour from the 15th century, when armourers sought to cover as much of the body as possible with steel plates without sacrificing mobility. While mail armour sufficed in the early Middle Ages, the advent of crossbows and heavier weapons necessitated the development of sophisticated plate systems. The "Avenger" style fits perfectly into fantasy settings but is grounded in the Gothic and Italian armour-making traditions.
Maintenance and Care
Steel is prone to corrosion, so it requires proper care:
- Storage: Keep the pauldrons in a dry place. Moisture is the main enemy.
- Oiling: Treat metal parts with preserving oil (e.g., WD-40 or specialised armour oils) after every use (and during long-term storage).
- Leather: Occasionally treat the leather straps with beeswax or leather balm to prevent cracking.
- Cleaning: Remove any surface rust with fine steel wool and re-oil the area.
Important Warnings and Recommendations
Note: This armour does not have its own strapping system around the chest! It must be buckled to a gorget or a cuirass that has the appropriate eyelets or straps. These items are not included. If you do not own a gorget yet, I recommend checking our plate accessories section.
Safety: This is a Class C product according to the classification of fencing weapons. The product is intended for LARP, theatre, and film purposes. Due to the 1.2 mm material thickness, it is not suitable for full-contact combat such as Buhurt (Battle of the Nations), as there is a risk of the plates deforming.
