Sharp Viking Broken-Back Seax with Exotic Wood Handle

Historical Context and Weapon Typology

The seax (or scramasax) was an absolutely indispensable tool and everyday weapon for Germanic tribes, Anglo-Saxons, and, naturally, Norse Vikings throughout the early Middle Ages. This particular model, with its characteristically angled blade spine, references the morphology of the so-called broken-back seax, which was immensely popular, especially in the British Isles between the 9th and 11th centuries. While wealthy Jarls wielded long swords, the common warrior relied in the close-quarters combat of a shield wall, as well as when skinning game and performing camp chores, entirely on this versatile, single-edged type of blade.

Safety Guidelines and Intended Use

This Viking knife comes equipped with a functional, sharp blade. For safety reasons, and due to the lack of specification for full-contact combat, we must strongly warn you: This weapon is under no circumstances intended for contact Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA), stage combat, or safe use in LARP battles. Any man-to-man combat could result in a fatal injury. The weapon is primarily designed as a high-quality decorative costume accessory, a collector's item, and a utility knife for general camp tasks, provided you are fully acquainted with the safe handling of sharp objects.

Care for Carbon Steel and Natural Materials

To ensure the knife serves you well and brings you joy for many years, it requires regular maintenance. The blade is forged from carbon steel, which boasts excellent cutting properties but is susceptible to rust. After every use, especially in damp environments or when cutting food, it is absolutely essential to carefully wash the blade, wipe it completely dry, and preserve it with a thin layer of natural or gun oil. We recommend treating the wooden handle occasionally with linseed oil or beeswax to prevent the wood from drying out and to maintain its beautiful grain. Protect the leather sheath from direct heat sources and regularly waterproof it using a quality leather balm.

Recommended Accessories for Your New Knife

To complement this gorgeous knife, we highly recommend purchasing a quality historical leather belt with a forged buckle for authentic suspension from your tunic, along with a pocket whetstone to keep your carbon steel blade perfectly sharp and ready for any camp chores.
