Fluted Brass Buttons, 15th Century Style, Set of 6
The Key to Historical Authenticity
In the 14th and especially the 15th century, buttons ceased to be a mere necessity and became a significant fashion accessory and an indicator of social status. Expensive and ornate buttons made of metal, such as brass, were afforded by the nobility and wealthy townsfolk. Dense rows of buttons adorned the sleeves and fronts of doublets (pourpoints) and women's dresses (kirtles). These fluted brass buttons are a typical example of the craftsmanship and aesthetics of the late Middle Ages and are an excellent choice for anyone striving for the most accurate reconstruction of historical clothing.
How to Properly Attach the Buttons
Attaching these buttons is straightforward and requires only basic sewing skills. We recommend using a strong thread, ideally linen or silk, which aligns with period techniques and is sufficiently durable.
- Pass the thread through the shank (loop) on the back of the button.
- Position the button at the desired location on your garment.
- Sew it securely to the fabric with several firm stitches. Ensure the stitches go through all layers of fabric for maximum strength.
- On the opposite edge of the garment, create a corresponding, preferably hand-stitched buttonhole, to prevent the fabric from fraying.

Care and Maintenance
Brass is a durable material that naturally oxidises and darkens over time. To maintain its original lustre and patina, simply polish the buttons occasionally with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using aggressive chemical cleaners or abrasive pastes, as they could damage the antique patina in the recesses and scratch the surface. When washing the garment, we recommend a gentle cycle or hand washing to prevent mechanical damage to the buttons and the surrounding fabric.
