Historical originals of similar cast buttons date back to the 15th through 17th centuries, bridging the Late Gothic, Renaissance, and Early Baroque eras. During this time, buttons ceased to serve merely a functional fastening role and became a prominent symbol of the wearer's social status and wealth. On the garments of the nobility and wealthy burghers, they frequently appeared in dense rows down the front of doublets and along sleeve slashes.
