Decorated Brass Aglets for Laces, Set of 10

How to Attach Aglets to a Lace

Attaching these aglets is easy and can be done in a few simple steps. This will give you a strong and reliable finish for your laces.

  1. Take the end of the lace you want to tip. If it is too frayed, trim it neatly.
  2. Push the end of the lace firmly into the wider opening of the aglet. A slight twisting motion can help.
  3. Take a sturdy needle and strong thread (for maximum authenticity, linen thread is ideal).
  4. Sew the thread through the pre-drilled hole in the side of the aglet and through the lace inside.
  5. Make several stitches back and forth to securely attach the aglet to the lace.
  6. Knot the thread tightly and trim the excess. You're done!

Aglets in the Mirror of History

Aglets (or aiglets) were ubiquitous in European fashion from the 14th to the 17th century. They served a dual purpose: practical and decorative. They protected the ends of laces and allowed them to be easily threaded through eyelets and holes. At the same time, they were a significant indicator of social status. While common folk used aglets made of tin or rolled sheet metal, wealthy townspeople and the nobility could afford brass, silver, or even gold aglets, sometimes adorned with precious stones. They were used to lace up practically everything – from attaching hose to a doublet, to lacing the bodices of women's dresses, to purely decorative cords.

Care and Maintenance

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc that naturally darkens and develops a patina over time due to environmental exposure. If you wish to maintain a bright golden shine, you can polish the aglets from time to time with a soft cloth and a suitable brass cleaner. However, many history enthusiasts prefer the natural patina that develops, as it adds to the product's authentic look.
