Brass Belt Buckle, Gothic / Renaissance Style, 10 x 7.5 cm
Design and Historical Context
This buckle boasts an intricate openwork (fenestrated) design with elegant curves and scalloped contours, typical of decorative metalwork from the Gothic and Renaissance eras. In those times, buckles were not just functional items but also important status symbols. Richly decorated brass accessories were worn by nobility, wealthy merchants, and soldiers to display their wealth and taste. This replica beautifully captures the spirit of that age.
How to Attach the Buckle to a Belt
Attaching this buckle is a simple crafting task. You will need a leather strap with a maximum width of 5 cm (2 inches).
- The end of the leather strap where you will attach the buckle needs to be thinned (or "skived") for a few centimetres.
- Loop the skived end through the centre bar of the buckle (the one that holds the moveable pin/prong).
- Fold the leather back onto the reverse side of the belt.
- You now have two options: either securely rivet the folded end to the belt (two or three rivets will suffice) or sew it firmly with a strong saddler's stitch.
- At the other end of the belt, you just need to punch holes for the buckle's pin.

Care Instructions
Thanks to the antiqued finish, this buckle is virtually maintenance-free. The patina gives it character.
- To clean, simply wipe the buckle with a soft, dry cloth.
- We do not recommend using abrasive cleaners or metal polishes, as they could remove the antique patina.
- If you still desire a higher shine, you can very gently polish only the raised edges with a brass cloth, but leaving the patina in the recesses will maintain its depth and character.
- Store in a dry environment.
