Dark Brown Gothic Leather Lace-Up Boots With Folded Cuff
Historical Context And Practical Use In Combat
In the 14th and early 15th centuries, similar ankle or mid-calf footwear represented the absolute standard for a wide swath of the population. It was popularly worn by craftsmen, merchants, and common soldiers. The front lacing allowed for a firm tightening of the shoe across the instep, ensuring the footwear held reliably on the foot even in deep mud. The folded top cuff served a practical protective function—it prevented small stones and debris from falling inside the boot. For the modern fencer (HEMA) and re-enactor, this model is equipped with a discreet rubber sole. A smooth leather sole is highly dangerous on wet grass or castle cobblestones. The rubber guarantees a safe and sure step without visually disrupting your overall medieval appearance.

Leather Care And Safety Warnings
High-quality leather requires regular maintenance. The boots are treated with a beeswax balm during production. After each event, clear them of dried mud and grease them with a high-quality leather balm or cobbler's oil. The leather will remain supple and acquire a natural darker patina. Scuffs from fencing can easily be covered with standard brown shoe polish. If the footwear gets wet at an event, stuff it with old newspaper and let it dry very slowly at room temperature. Never dry the boots on a hot radiator, near a blazing fire, or in harsh summer sunlight! Rapid drying would irreversibly damage the leather, causing it to harden and crack.
Recommended Accessories
To complement these versatile medieval boots, we highly recommend purchasing period woollen chausses (leggings) that tie to a belt, along with traditional linen braies (underpants), creating an absolutely authentic foundation for your historical attire.
